706.882.9909Debby Baker is a native of Blackshear, Georgia, and she earned her journalism degree at Georgia Southern College (now University). Her love of the arts started as a child when she listened to Broadway cast albums and sang all the parts, leading to a lifetime passion for performing arts.
She was a copy editor and weekend editor at the Augusta Chronicle before marrying and settling down to raise two amazing daughters. She returned to journalism in the early 1990s and had a 30-year career as a writer and editor for several newspapers in the state. She moved to LaGrange in 2004 to take a position at the LaGrange Daily News before leaving to take a position at LaGrange College as a writer in Communications and Marketing for 13 years.
While living in Milledgeville, Debby helped form a community theater group she led for several years before moving to LaGrange. She served on the board of LSPA for several terms, six years as president.
She nurtured her love of the arts in her daughters, Anna and Sarah, who performed in many plays and shows during childhood. Anna is now director of theatre arts at Putnam County High School (Eatonton), and Anna’s son (Debby’s grandson) Aidan attended PCHS. He performed the titular role of “Pippin” in the school’s 2024 fall musical.
Sarah is a registered nurse in LaGrange, having worked at West Georgia Medical Center and Piedmont Newnan. LSPA audiences may remember her as The Witch in Into the Woods and in the School of Rock ensemble.
Debby and her husband, Dan, are volunteers at Sweetland Amphitheatre, Friends of the Library, and LSPA.
