Synopsis

“Be careful what you wish for” seems to be the ongoing theme in Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Brothers Grimm inspired musical, Into the Woods. The story follows The Baker and his wife who wish to have a child, Cinderella who wishes to go the King’s Festival, and Jack who wishes his cow would give some milk. When the Baker and his wife are visited by the neighborhood witch, who reveals to them that she placed a curse on their family, the two set off on a journey into the woods to reverse the curse. Also in the woods, we meet Little Red, who is trying to visit her grandmother, the Wolf who loves tasty little girls, the Witch’s daughter Rapunzel, and the Princes chasing after their loves. By the end of Act I, everyone has gotten their wish and will seemingly live happily ever after. But in Act II, when Jack’s beanstalk brings them a visit from an angry Giant, we see how the consequences of their actions haunt them in disastrous ways. The community must come together to save each other and their kingdom, but sacrifices must be made.

Character Breakdown

The Witch
Script Gender: Female
Age Range: 30+,
Vocal Range: F3-G5

The Witch is a powerfully magical being who lives next door to the Baker and Baker’s Wife. She wants to undo a curse that has left her wounded physically and emotionally, but needs others’ help to get it done. She is first and foremost a mother and is controlling and overprotective of her daughter Rapunzel, who she wants to shield from the cruelties of the world. She’s not good, she’s not nice, she’s just right.

We are looking for an actor who is funny, truthful, surprising, magnetic, and quirky, with an incredible command of text and a killer voice that can sing a lullaby and bring us home with a huge eleven o’clock number.

The Baker’s Wife
Script Gender: Female
Age Range: Late 20s to Mid-40s
Vocal Range: F3-G5

The Baker’s Wife is a clever, playful, and driven woman who is struggling to conceive a child with her husband. She is generous and perceptive and often puts the needs and egos of others before her own. She is caught between her feelings of responsibility to her family and her thirst for adventure – she often feels she is in the wrong story.

We are looking for an actor who is warm, optimistic, self-possessed, and endearing, who can live in the moment and communicate her thoughts as she’s having them.

The Baker
Script Gender: Male
Age Range: Late 20s to Mid-40s
Vocal Range: Ab2-G4

The Baker is a loyal, caring, but self-serious man who is struggling to conceive a child with his wife. He lost his parents when he was very young, and this has left him fearful and a bit tightly-wound. He must gather all his strength and courage and go into the woods to break his family curse. He finds, to his great surprise, that he is different in the woods.

We are looking for an atypical leading man who is lovable, sensitive, and a bit nerdy, who can build great onstage chemistry with the Baker’s Wife and break our hearts when he feels all hope is lost.

Narrator/Mysterious Man
Script Gender: Male
Age Range: 40+,
Vocal Range: G2-E4

The Narrator is a good-natured observer of the antics of the other characters. He is in control of the story – until he isn’t. The Mysterious Man is a mischievous and whimsical meddler with a past riddled with pain and regret. He disappoints, he disappears, he dies (but he doesn’t).

We are looking for an actor who is dynamic, welcoming, playful, and in command of their voice and physicality.

Cinderella
Script Gender: Female
Age Range: 18 to 30
Vocal Range: G3-G5

Cinderella is a downtrodden but resilient young woman living in her father’s house but under the rule of her cruel stepmother and stepsisters. She has grown up without friends, so is very lonely and a bit eccentric. She has never had the freedom to make her own choices, and when she finally gets the opportunity, she becomes anxious and indecisive. She wants more than anything to attend the King’s festival but once there she finds herself being pursued (and she’s not in the mood).

We are looking for an actor who is earthy and vulnerable, who can grow from self-conscious and clumsy to strong and maternal.

Little Red Riding Hood
Script Gender: Female
Age Range: 18 to 30 (to play younger)
Vocal Range: Bb3-F5

Little Red is a spirited and somewhat selfish girl who lives with her mother and has been tasked with bringing a care package to her ailing grandmother. This is no easy errand, as she struggles with self-control and her naivety and fearlessness mean she is highly trusting of strangers who may interrupt her journey. She is carefree, opinionated and brutally honest, but discovers that nice is different than good.

We are looking for an actor who is youthfully confident, with a tough exterior that can crumble when faced with life’s traumas. Must have impeccable comedic timing and the ability to make unexpected choices.

Jack
Script Gender: Male
Age Range: 18 to 30 (to play younger)
Vocal Range: B2-G4

Jack is a gentle but regrettably absent-minded boy who lives with his mother. He is devoted to his best friend Milky White the cow, but he must sell her so his family will have enough money for food. When he sees the opportunity to buy Milky White back, he makes an impulsive decision with gigantic consequences that may see him swallowed for lunch.

We are seeking an actor who is earnest, youthful, and daring, with a heart of gold and the ability to play a simple character with humor and honesty.

Cinderella’s Prince/Wolf
Script Gender: Male
Age Range: 20 to 40
Vocal Range: Bb2-Gb4

Cinderella’s Prince is privileged and beautiful, and he knows it. He loves the thrill of the chase and spends his days passionately pursuing his next conquest. He was raised to be charming, not sincere. The Wolf is a voracious hunter with an insatiable appetite, who bites off more than he can chew.

We are looking for an actor who is dashing and game, capable of farcical comedy, and with strong physicality.

Rapunzel’s Prince
Script Gender: Male
Age Range: 18 to 35
Vocal Range: C#3-E4

Rapunzel’s Prince is the spare to the heir, a genial if somewhat air-headed romantic. He falls in love with nearly every woman he sees but is often thwarted by seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

We are looking for an actor who is dashing and game, capable of farcical comedy and with strong physicality.

Jack’s Mother
Script Gender: Female
Age Range: 40 to 65
Vocal Range: Bb3-Gb5

Jack’s Mother is an exasperated but loving single mother who is worried that her family is near destitution. She strives to be patient with her daydreamer son, encouraging him to be more responsible, and when Jack’s safety is threatened, she proves herself to be a fierce protector.

Rapunzel
Script Gender: Female
Age Range: 20s to 30s
Vocal Range: B3-A5

Rapunzel is a sheltered and desperately lonely woman who has spent her life locked in a tower. Despite her longing for freedom, she loves her mother dearly and doesn’t want to hurt her. The more she learns of the world, the more cruel she finds it.

She has an ethereal and hypnotic soprano voice.

Steward
Script Gender: Male
Age Range: 25 to 50
Vocal Range: G2-G4

The Steward is self-important and duty-bound, craving order amidst the chaos of the other characters. He is a consummate professional who reaches his breaking point, with deadly consequences.

The person cast in this role may be asked to understudy another character.

Cinderella’s Stepmother/
Cinderella’s Mother
Script Gender: Female
Age Range: 35 to 65
Vocal Range: F3-F#5

Cinderella’s Stepmother is the epitome of a materialistic social climber. She is cruel, abusive, selfish, and cowardly, but looks pretty good doing it. Cinderella’s Mother is gentle, benevolent, loving and very unfortunately, dead.

Florinda
Script Gender: Female
Age Range: 18 to 35
Vocal Range: G3-G5

Florinda is Cinderella’s vain and mean-spirited stepsister, beautiful of face but vile and black of heart. Oblivious to her flaws until it is too late, she pays a dire cost for her blind ambition.

Lucinda
Script Gender: Female
Age Range: 18 to 35
Vocal Range: G3-G5

Lucinda is Cinderella’s vain and mean-spirited stepsister, beautiful of face but vile and black of heart. Oblivious to her flaws until it is too late, she pays a dire cost for her blind ambition.

Little Red’s Granny
Script Gender: Female
Age Range: 40 to 65

Little Red’s Granny is a woman whose age and stature belie her vengeful spirit.
(This role will be combined with other roles - no audition material)

The Giant
Script Gender: Female
Age Range: 35 to 65

The Giant has a point, really. She has been terribly wronged and is looking to take her revenge (powerful speaking voice required).
(This role will be combined with other roles - no audition material)

Milky White
Script Gender: Female
Age Range: N/A

Milky White is an aged family cow with a heart of gold. Despite her declining health (and lack of milk) she is dearly beloved by her best friend, Jack.
(May be combined with other roles - no audition material)
